Change for CharityFrequently Asked QuestionsHow does the program work? Beginning January 2009, NES residential customers will be automatically enrolled in Change for Charity. Being enrolled simply means that your electric bill is rounded up each month to the next highest dollar. The change that is collected goes into the NES Change for Charity Fund to be distributed to charitable 501(c)(3) organizations that provide benevolent services in the community. How does it affect my bill? The most your bill can be rounded up each month is 99-cents. For example, if your bill is $49.01, it will round up to $50.00. The 99-cent donation will show up as a separate item on your bill. The average amount you will donate to Change for Charity is $6 a year and never more than $11.88 a year. Can everyone participate in Change for Charity? Any residential customer can participate in Change for Charity with the exception of those who are enrolled in Budget Billing. This program is not offered to commercial and industrial customers. Where do the funds go? Change for Charity funds are distributed to charitable groups that support projects in the communities of the NES service area. Twenty percent of Change for Charity funds are available in grant form to 501(c)(3) organizations, and 80% of funds will be distributed to Metro Action Commission, Ladies of Charity, and Big Brothers of Nashville for energy assistance. Who decides how the money is distributed? Change for Charity funds are overseen and administered by a three-member Community Involvement Committee comprised of NES representatives. The primary duties of this committee are to evaluate applications made to the program and grant awards based on the funds available. What if I participate in Project Help? Customers who participate in Project Help will still automatically be enrolled in Change for Charity. Both donations will be listed as separate items on your bill. What if I don’t want to participate in Change for Charity? NES encourages every customer to participate in the program. However, if you would prefer not to contribute, simply fill out our Opt Out form online or call the Change for Charity Hotline at 615-747-3600. You can opt out at any time. Who can apply for funding? Change for Charity will provide grants to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. Are Change for Charity contributions tax deductible? Yes. |
